The City of History
Incorporated in 1869, known as "The City of History", the City of San Juan Bautista is nestled in the heart of the San Juan Valley between the Gabilan Mountains and Flint Hills. Rich with culture and history, San Juan Bautista offers residents and visitors a refreshing small town atmosphere filled with the charm and character of the past.
Though primarily an agricultural community and known nationally for its organic farming, San Juan Bautista’s streets are lined with a variety of shops and boutiques - many specializing in antiques. Restaurants, an ice cream parlor, saloons, and a coffee roastery are ready to quench your thirst and satisfy your hunger. Be sure to visit our local Welcome Center located within the Bakery. There you’ll find information on all upcoming events and regional interests.
Things to Do
Tour the Old Mission San Juan Bautista, the largest of the California missions, and our State Historic Park with the only Spanish Plaza left in California. Enjoy local theater at El Teatro Campesino, which has set the standard for professional Latino theatrical production in the United States. Proudly on the National Register of Historic Places, the Third Street Historic District offers the San Juan Bautista Commercial District offers a wide variety of rare and unique items as well as authentic food from around the world. While you enjoy the downtown experience be sure to look around town and take in the town’s historic aspects - you might even meet a few ghosts! San Juan Bautista has something for everyone and is sure to become one of your favorite destinations.
